Field Notes: The Northerly Edition

Posted on November 21st, 2011

I swear by these. Nothing makes me happier than receiving a new 3-pack of Field Notes in the mail. I ordered these last week when they sent out the early invite to their previous customers (hint, get on their mailing list for early offers). Instant buy.

(ps. don’t tell my wife that I ordered yet another 3-pack)

District Nights

Posted on November 21st, 2011

I’m a sucker for time lapse video of any sort, especially when it is beautifully done, such as this.

Drew Geraci says this about his video:

This piece is all about DC at dusk and night — concentrating on the monuments and historial buildings on the mall. During the making of this time-lapse, I was hassled/stopped 27 times by DC police and received 5 parking tickets. That’s pretty much how it goes in DC.

With help from my buddy Drew Breese, Russ Scalf, and a few unnamed sources we were able to complete this production… even if it was slightly behind schedule. It took nearly 3 months to film the sunsets — since DC weather isn’t always the best.

For the production, I used a combination of standard frames, tone-mapping, and traditional HDR (on a few shots). It’s quite the mixture.

I hope you enjoy this piece and DC just as much as I do.

The Vimeo video page lists his colophon of hardware, software and music.. Drew’s website is TheVoder.com.

Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1

Posted on November 10th, 2011

Apple: This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including: Fixes bugs affecting battery life Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation Macworld has more details. I’ve been running the Beta 1 and Beta 2 versions of this update for several weeks. All of the battery life issues folks have been experiencing on iOS 5 is fixed by this update. The difference is night & day. You can update using the old method of connecting to iTunes, or you use the new delta update method, over the air, by going to Settings -> General – Software Updates. This second method is what I recommend as it is much quicker and…

OmniFocus for iPad 1.0 was released today.. MacSparky has an excellently detailed review already.

What is Fast App Switching?

Posted on June 28th, 2010

Matt Neuburg over at TidBITS wrote a nice piece on the intricacies of Fast App Switching that does a wonderful job of explaining exactly what is expected by the user from iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 phones. I highly recommend anyone with an iPhone 3GS or new iPhone 4 to read this article as it will give you a much better understanding of how iOS 4 handles this. An excerpt: Those of you who have just used iTunes to install a shiny new iOS 4 on your iPhone or iPod touch, or who are about to obtain a shiny new iPhone 4, may find yourselves wondering about one of the touted features of this new system, fast app switching. What is…

This is why Apple’s tablet is going to be a big deal…

Posted on January 5th, 2010

Gruber wrote this. Then Marco wrote this. Then Siracusa wrote this. And finally (maybe), Marco has written another article which I think comes to some very nice conclusions that I agree with: The Tablet is Apple’s chance at applying the lessons learned on the iPhone to a device big and versatile enough to be a low-needs user’s only computer, or to be the only computer that a power user brings while mobile (as Gruber suggested) instead of a laptop. It can be the computer that we buy our parents or grandparents without worrying that we’re signing ourselves up for years of painful tech support calls as they “lose” documents by saving them in the wrong folder, think they can’t save any more files because…

@oceankidbilly Skiing the Air Force Memorial (photo by @sopetaia)

So my friend Rob, is an avid snow skier…and we recently had about 18-20″ of snow here in the DC area. So what does he decide to do? Ski down the hill that the Air Force Memorial is on in Arlington. Awesome. < p>His girlfriend, and my good friend, Sheri Opetaia-Williamson took the photo. Oh and, their antics were also mentioned over on Kottke.org.
