Andrews Joint Service Air Show

Posted on May 22nd, 2011

My lovely wife and I went to what was previously known as Andrews Airforce Base, now called Joint Service Base Andrews for the annual Air Show and Open House. All branches of the military were there showing off their hardware and I brought my cameras along.

Steff and I had been wanting to go for several years but kept forgetting to or would have other plans already made on that weekend when we found out about it. We managed to have a free weekend this year and decided to go. We came back with over 650 pictures and a nasty sunburn (72 degree day + cool breeze makes one forget about the sun).

You can view the entire set of 680 photographs but first scroll below to see some of what I think are the best shots that I embedded here. Also, if you scroll entirely to the bottom, you’ll see a video I put together from some clips of the Air Force Thunderbirds show that I shot on my iPhone.

In Focus with Alan Taylor

Posted on March 16th, 2011

It has come to my attention that not everyone has gotten the memo that Alan Taylor, creator of the fantastic The Big Picture photography blog over at Boston.com left the site several months ago. The Atlantic was smart enough to make him a good enough offer to bring him over to their site, making him a Senior Editor and allowing him to start a new photography blog there, called In Focus. Alan has said previously that this move has allowed him full editorial control in a way that he never had at The Big Picture, doing things like increasing the resolution the end-user is allowed to select for the photos. In Focus allows the viewer to select either 1024px or 1280px width images. In…

Steffanie’s Pre-surgery Haircut

Posted on March 10th, 2011

Steffanie got her haircut tonight, as she is 10 days out from brain surgery, and wanted to get her hair cut short in prep for the doctors having to cut a little in the back for the procedure. I took some photos.

Playing Tour Guide

Steffanie’s mom is visiting us here in DC and I decided to take a good many pictures as we walked around DC today using an excellent new HDR iPhone program that Merlin Man recommended. I was surprised at how well the application and the iPhone 4 performed as a point and shoot digital camera. Oh, and I had to throw this last one in there even though it is not HDR. This is the original costume used for C-3PO in Return of the Jedi. I met C-3PO, in person!

The Abandoned Six Flags in New Orleans

Posted on November 5th, 2010

Creepy video by Teddy Smith, touring the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans, destroyed by Hurricane Katrina five years ago. Here is an aerial photo of the theme park taken on 14 September 2005. Great Flickr set of photos from the park.

I took several pictures on both my Canon 40D and my iPhone 4 while down at my grandparent’s place in southern Virginia this past weekend. It was my grandfather’s 85th birthday. While there, I walked out behind the house to snap a few photos on both the DSLR and iPhone. I was particularly pleased with how this specific photo, taken on my iPhone 4, turned out. I’ve not edited this photo in any way. Click though to see a blown up version of this image. Lets see your Blackberry/Droid/Windows Phone 7 do that.

What I Carry

Posted on August 23rd, 2010

A blog post from Patrick Rhone is soliciting others to submit pictures of what they carry in their pockets on a daily basis. The idea started from Dave Caolo which was prompted by a tweet from Patrick. Patrick responded to Dave’s post and solicited others to do so as well. These types of things interest me as well, so here’s mine: Before I got my iPhone I would have my Blackberry (work), iPod Classic, wallet & keys. That was 2008 & prior. Over the years my keychain has shrunk as well. Our most recent move in June allowed me to shed a security fob which was needed at my old apartment. My new apartment key has a fob included in it (that weird circular…
